The presence of connected transportation networks is essential for those who cycle, walk, use micro mobility devices, or use wheelchairs to access public transportation. Yet many Americans, when trying to access public transportation, encounter barriers such as no sidewalks, sidewalks with uneven surfaces, roads without safe shoulders, and lack of safe options to cross the road. In this session, panelists will discuss the importance of a robust active transportation infrastructure to enable safe, affordable, and equitable access to public transportation and to realize societal benefits like reduction of CO2 emissions and improved health. In addition, panelists will provide examples from their work that have yielded results and thus improved public transportation access for those across the spectrum of diversity characteristics including age, income, ability, gender, and race/ethnicity.
